Blue Note's close at hand roundup series moves on to account the '60s label stint of a bebop old soldier. Returning to the States from Europe to divide several dates, Dexter Gordon managed to effect some of his best stuff because of Alfred Lion's venerable jazz troop. This fine disc features many of the highlights, including the one and the other breezy swingers and dusky ballads. Ranging from one incredible bop long-player with trumpeter Donald Byrd ("Tanya") to one of his patented after-hours smoothies ("Don't Explain"), Gordon reveals his wide store of talent with solos that are as well-as; not only-but also; not only-but; not alone-but intricate and beguiling, and that's his method for a set that also takes in bossa nova ("Soy Califa") and some fetching originals ("Cheese Cake"). Gordon novices should begin here.
